H.H. The President sponsors the 5th Date Palm International Conference and Nahayan Mabarak opens the conference and honors the winners of Khalifa International Date Palm Award

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (May God Protect Him), H.H. Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and a member of the Executive Council Accompanied With H. H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Minister of Culture, Youth & Social Development, President of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa International Date Palm Award, opened yesterday morning the activities of the 5th International Date Palm Conference at the Emirates Palace in the capital, Abu Dhabi, and honored the winners of Khalifa International Date Palm Award within the five categories of the award’s sixth session in the presence of their Excellency Arab and foreign ministers of agriculture, their Excellency ambassadors in the State, directors of the specialized regional and international organizations and a host of those interested in agriculture, in general, and date palm, in particular, form both public and private sectors on state level and from Arabian Gulf Region.

During the honoring ceremony of the winners of the Sixth Session of Khalifa International Date Palm Award-2014, H.E Sheikh Nahyan praised the great efforts generously exerted by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed AlNahyan (May God Protect Him) for achievement of sustainable development at all levels and in all fields. Agricultural sector, and mainly date palm tree, has an outstanding position within H.H thought as reflected in a lot of gifts and the great support to the blessed tree and the workers in this field. This is not new but a normal extension of the interest the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (God rest his soul in peace), builder of the agricultural revival and founder of the U.A.E, rendered to date palm tree and who laid the pillars of an extensive agricultural revival, emphasizing the date palm tree in particular. Under his leadership, the Emirates became a global pioneering center for date palm growing and dates production.

H.H. Sheikh Nahayan extended great thanks to H.H. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Vice President of U.A.E, Prime Minister and Governor of Dubai, for his constant care of well-being of the people and support of the green economy towards
achieving national sustainable development. Thanks and sincere appreciation were also extended to H.H. Lt. General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Higher Commander of the Armed Forces for whom we put on record his strong support of this international award and being very proud of his wise vision of future agricultural development in U.A.E, in which date palm, in particular, is at the very core. We are also proud of H.H. Sheikh Mohammad great care of keeping the Emirates a pioneering example of successful work and efficient and outstanding accomplishments in all fields. Thanks and sincere appreciation were extended, as well, to H.H. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs for providing full support to this Award and for his proper guidance to make this Award an actually fruitful and successful tool of developing date palm growing and date production in U.A.E, the region and the world.

Within the opening speech, H.H. Sheikh Nahyan also added that “ today, we are celebrating together honoring of the winners of the Award’s categories, which is a good occasion for renewing loyalty and fidelity vow to be up to the expectations of H.H. the
Father, President of U.A.E for assuming the responsibility of proceeding forward in serving productive farmers, each according to his respective position in scientific research and technical development, for the benefit of man and for providing healthy food at world level as date plays today an important role in bridging the food gap of the people of many countries worldwide due to being one of the most important elements of food security according to FAO classification.

Terminating his speech, H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan Minister of Culture, Youth & Social Development, and President of the Board of Trustees of Khalifa International Date Palm Award announced launching of the activities of the 5th Date Palm International Conference, organized by U.A.E University in cooperation with Khalifa International Date Palm Award. This conference is held this year under the title “New Dimensions & Challenges in the Field of Sustainable Production of Date Palm”, which is an important topic after sustainable development has had such a special standing within the thought and efforts of all governments, institutions and individuals
worldwide.

He then wished the participants all success and luck, stressing the role of researchers and scientists in identifying environmentally friendly agricultural techniques and in clarifying the pioneering initiatives of U.A.E in this concern and its care to realize sustainable development the various fields according to a scientific method open to the best practices and successful modules at world level, seeking, meanwhile introduction of the required technical and behavioral changes for environmental protection with the relevant due care and attention.
Honoring ceremony of the most important figures, who played an effective role and had useful impact in the field of palm trees growing and dates production, took place in addition to honoring of the winners of five categories of the
Award, as follows:

 The Second Winner is: Mrs. Frédérique Aberlenc Bertossi / France.
The Distinguished Producers Category
 The First Winner is: Mr. Boumaraf Messaoud / Algeria.
 The Second Winner is: Was Withheld.
The Best distinguished Technology:
 The First winner is: Dr. Moayyad Mohammed Rushdy Al-Hakim / Iraq.
 The Second Winner is: Dr. Mohammad Ali Basunia / Sultanate ofOman.
The Best Developmental Project Category:
 The First Winner is: Al Foah / UAE.
 The Second winner is: Sudanese Date Palm Society / Sudan.
The Category of the Distinguished Personality:
 The Winner is: Prof. Philip Barry Tomlinson / United Kingdom.

The first winner gets an amount of AED 300,000 with a trophy and an appreciation certificate while the second winner gets an amount of AED 200,000 with a trophy and an appreciation certificate.

The 5th Date Palm International Conference commenced its activities yesterday afternoon with three scientific sessions. The first session, headed by Dr. Frans Hofman/USA and Dr. Mohammad Abdul Mohsen/U.A.E, focused of the present situation of date palm worldwide; the second, headed by Dr. Edwardo
Blumwald/USA and Dr. Shiam Korop/U.A.E focused on evolution of date palm and the third, headed by Dr. Abdallah Wahabi/FAO and Dr. Francis Martti/ France, focused on latest prevention methods of date palm diseases. 51 papers and 32 scientific posters were presented about the topics of the three sessions.
